Kukkola Rapids are the best reason to leave Tornio's centre. The river runs hard here for several kilometres, and the villages on both banks have kept old whitefish traditions, including dip-netting from timber platforms and roasting fish by the fire. It is a simple, very northern outing: river noise, smoke, and the Swedish bank close enough to wave at.
