Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art

Riverside modern-art museum built around Turku sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen's city collection

Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art, usually shortened to WAM, sits on the east bank of the Aura River and gives Turku a proper modern-art counterweight to its medieval castle and cathedral. The core collection is built around the work of Wäinö Aaltonen, one of Finland's major 20th-century sculptors, but the museum is not a frozen memorial: temporary exhibitions bring in Finnish and international contemporary art.

The building is part of the pleasure. Its low modernist rooms use skylights and broad windows rather than grand museum theatrics, so the visit feels calm and river-facing. Pair it with a walk along the Aura; it is close enough to the centre to drop in for an hour, but substantial enough to reward anyone with an interest in Finnish art.
