Vanoise National Park begins on the high ground around Val-d'Isère and changes the mood completely. The lifts and pistes give way to glaciers, ibex country, alpine lakes, and long marked trails running toward the wilder interior of the massif. It is the best reason to consider Val-d'Isère outside ski season.
Day walks range from easy balcony paths to full mountain days, and the GR5 passes through the wider area. Conditions change quickly at altitude, even in summer, so carry layers and check local trail advice before setting out. The reward is a version of the French Alps that feels much bigger than the resort map.
