The Gothic Dominican Church, a few minutes' walk from St. Martin's, is worth visiting for a single masterpiece: Martin Schongauer's Virgin of the Rose Bush, painted in 1473. The Virgin sits in a thicket of roses with the infant Christ on her lap; the detail of the petals and leaves was unmatched in northern European painting at the time, and the work directly influenced Albrecht Dürer.
The church itself is austere and high — long Gothic windows of 14th-century stained glass run almost the full height of the nave, lighting the white interior in coloured bands. The Schongauer is hung in a side chapel under careful security since the famous 1972 theft. There is a small admission charge.
