Dolder

Riquewihr's high medieval gate tower, watching over the upper end of the old town.

The Dolder is Riquewihr's emblem: a tall medieval gate tower at the upper end of the main street. From outside the walls it still reads as a defensive structure; from inside the village it looks almost domestic, with timber framing and a steep roof above the stone base.

It is the best single marker of the old town's scale. Stand below it and you can see how compact Riquewihr is, squeezed between wall, vineyard, and mountain slope. The small museum inside is worth a look if it is open, but the tower earns its keep even from the street.

A story
The Dolder looks decorative now, but it was a working defensive gate: the outer face is plain and watchful, while the village side carries the half-timbered charm visitors remember. That split personality says a lot about Alsace, a region where prettiness and border anxiety have long lived side by side.
