The Col du Donon is a mountain pass about 15 kilometres north of Schirmeck, at the northern end of the Vosges range. At its summit (1009 metres) stands a small Gallo-Roman temple reconstruction and a viewing table that, on clear days, gives views east across the Rhine plain toward the Black Forest and west into the Lorraine plateau. The col has been a significant crossing point between Alsace and Lorraine since antiquity.
The drive or cycle up from Schirmeck winds through dense beech and fir forest. There are several walking trails from the summit and from the col itself. In winter, the road is sometimes closed or requires snow chains. The Donon is a good half-day excursion from Schirmeck, combining the drive with a short walk to the summit viewpoint.
