Maison Hennessy

The world's largest cognac house, with cellars on both banks of the Charente

Address Quai Richard Hennessy, 16100 Cognac

Hennessy dominates the cognac trade the way few companies dominate any luxury sector. The visit is polished and well-organized: an introductory film, a walk through the cooperage where barrels are still made by hand, a boat crossing of the Charente to the ageing warehouses on the opposite bank, and a tasting at the end. The riverside setting — old stone chais stretching along the water — gives a sense of the industrial scale behind the luxury brand.

Book ahead in summer. Multiple tours run daily in English, French, and Chinese, and they fill quickly. The shop carries expressions and limited editions unavailable elsewhere in France.

A story
Hennessy sells around 50 million bottles of cognac per year — roughly half of all cognac consumed worldwide. The company was founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish officer who had fought for Louis XV and chose to stay in the Charente. The oldest reserves in the Hennessy Paradise cellar date to the 1800s, and a master blender can draw on up to 800 separate eaux-de-vie to build a single blend.
