Place Saint-Nicolas

The Place Saint-Nicolas is the main square of Pujols, just inside the south gate, paved in irregular stone with the church on one side and a row of arcaded houses on the other. It is the closest thing the village has to a meeting place — a couple of restaurants put tables out under the arcades from spring onwards, and the small weekly market sets up here on Sunday mornings.

The square works best at the edges of the day. Mornings are quiet and the light comes in low across the stones; in the evening, after the day visitors have left, the locals sit out with a glass of wine and the village is more or less yours.
