Porte de Paris

The Porte de Paris is the northern gate of the medieval bastide, a tall brick tower that has guarded the road north towards the Périgord since the 14th century. It is the more imposing of the two surviving gates — five storeys high, with a narrow archway through its base and the original portcullis groove cut into the stonework above.

You pass under it walking from the centre of town towards the suburbs and the railway station. The interior is occasionally opened for temporary exhibitions; otherwise it is best appreciated from below at street level, looking up at the brick courses and the pigeon-holes in the upper walls.
