Église Saint-Pierre

The Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre stands in the centre of the village, a short walk from the château. It dates from the 12th century and was built in the dark volcanic stone — local basalt and trachyte — that gives so many Auvergne churches their austere, fortress-like appearance. The exterior is plain but well-proportioned; the interior retains its original barrel-vaulted nave and some medieval carved capitals.

Like most of the region's Romanesque churches, Saint-Pierre was built in the shadow of the great abbey at Clermont-Ferrand and reflects the same building tradition. It is kept open during daylight hours and makes a cool refuge on a hot afternoon. The churchyard has views over the Sioule valley.
