Sedan Synagogue

Sedan's former synagogue is a handsome 1878 building in Romanesque and Byzantine Revival styles, designed by architect Alfred Mazuel. It was built for the town's growing Jewish community — predominantly Ashkenazi textile workers who had settled here in the 19th century, when Sedan's cloth industry was at its height.

The congregation was decimated during the Second World War, and the building stood abandoned for decades before being classified as a French historic monument in 1984. In 2023 it was acquired by the local council and converted into an exhibition space. The exterior alone — the striped stonework, the arched windows, the small dome — is worth a look as you walk through the old quarter.
