Terra Vecchia is the oldest inhabited quarter of Bastia, the dense tangle of streets and stairways that developed between the Vieux Port and the fortified citadel above. It is the most Italian-feeling part of an already very Italian city — the narrow lanes, tall stone buildings, and small neighbourhood churches could easily be in Genoa or Livorno.
The quarter contains several significant churches, including the Église Sainte-Croix with its Cristo Nero and the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste overlooking the Vieux Port. Wandering without a plan is the best approach: the lanes open unexpectedly onto small squares with fountains, and stairways cut between buildings to emerge at entirely different street levels. The neighbourhood is best explored on foot in the morning or early evening.
