Jazz à Juan

Late-July jazz festival in a pine grove by the sea

For ten days in mid-to-late July, the pine grove behind the Juan-les-Pins seafront becomes one of the more atmospheric concert venues on the coast. Headline acts play under the umbrella pines with the bay just visible through the trunks; smaller free shows spill out into the town in the afternoon.

Programming has broadened well beyond classic jazz — recent line-ups have included Norah Jones, Sting and Gregory Porter alongside straight-ahead jazz players. Book tickets in advance for the main acts; the cheaper standing-room areas often sell out the day of the show.

A story
Founded in 1960, Jazz à Juan is one of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe — older than Montreux. The list of people who have played the Pinède Gould reads like a jazz hall of fame: Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Stan Getz, Keith Jarrett, Sonny Rollins.
