Juan-les-Pins

Sandy beach resort glued to the south side of Antibes

Juan-les-Pins is the resort half of the same commune — a flat, sandy stretch of beach with hotels, bars and beach clubs lined up along the seafront. In the 1920s it was the most fashionable address on the coast: Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Picasso all spent time here, and Tender Is the Night is largely set in the small hotels along the bay.

It's louder and younger than the old town across the cap. The beaches are good — long, sandy, and gently sloping, unusual on a coast of pebbles. In late July the Pinède Gould park hosts Jazz à Juan, one of the longest-running jazz festivals in the world. Out of season Juan-les-Pins goes quiet and you can have the beach to yourself.
