Notre Dame de la Garoupe

Sailors' chapel and lighthouse on the highest point of Cap d'Antibes

The double chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garoupe crowns the summit of Cap d'Antibes, alongside a working lighthouse. The interior is covered in ex-votos — model boats hanging from the ceiling, painted scenes of shipwrecks survived, plaques of thanks — left by sailors over four centuries. It is one of the more striking collections of votive offerings on the Mediterranean.

The terrace outside has one of the broadest panoramas on the coast: from the Esterel mountains in the west, across the Lerins islands, to the Italian Alps. You can reach it on foot from Plage de la Garoupe up the Chemin du Calvaire, a Stations-of-the-Cross path through pines — about thirty minutes uphill.
