Cimiez is the elegant residential hill neighbourhood north of the city centre, where Belle Époque mansions sit among olive groves and the ruins of a Roman city. This was once Cemenelum, capital of the Roman province of Alpes Maritimae, and the archaeological park here preserves an amphitheatre and thermal baths from the 2nd and 3rd centuries — remarkable to encounter between apartment buildings and museum walls. The Matisse Museum occupies a Genoese villa at the top of the hill; both Matisse and Dufy are buried in the Franciscan monastery garden nearby. The jazz festival held in Cimiez each July uses the Roman amphitheatre as its open-air stage.
