Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte

A magnificent 17th-century chateau and formal garden that helped inspire Versailles

Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte is one of the great French chateau visits south-east of Paris, close enough to pair with Fontainebleau but distinct in character. Built for Nicolas Fouquet in the 17th century, it brought together architect Louis Le Vau, painter Charles Le Brun, and landscape designer Andre Le Notre in a composition that directly influenced Versailles.

The gardens are essential to the experience. Long axes, terraces, canals, and optical effects make the estate feel theatrical, especially when viewed from the chateau steps or the far end of the grounds. It is a full half-day trip rather than a minor side stop.
