Lac de Vésoles

A high-altitude reservoir set into the granite hills above Fraisse-sur-Agout, the Lac de Vésoles is the village's most dramatic natural feature. The water is cold and clear, ringed by moorland and old chestnut trees, with a silence that contrasts sharply with the beach resorts two hours to the south.

The path from the village climbs through forest before emerging at the lake shore. A well-known variant, the Chemin des 1000 Marches — the Path of a Thousand Steps — descends steeply from the lake to the base of the Saut de Vésoles waterfall below, a lung-burning route in either direction. In summer the lake is calm enough for fishing and light paddling.
