Église Saint-Pierre

The Église Saint-Pierre dominates the centre of Prades with its massive pink-marble bell tower, one of the finest Romanesque towers in Catalonia. The church was largely rebuilt in the 17th century on medieval foundations, and the Baroque interior contains extraordinary carved altarpieces in gilded wood — the main altarpiece, attributed to Joseph Sunyer, is a masterpiece of Catalan Baroque decoration.

The church is at the heart of the Prades old town and gives the best excuse for wandering the surrounding medieval streets, which are compact and well-preserved. The weekly market takes place in the square outside, and on summer evenings the stone facades of the old town catch the last light beautifully.

A story
The pink marble font in Saint-Pierre is one of the oldest surviving Romanesque baptismal fonts in France, carved from the same local Villefranche marble that was used in the Abbey of Cuxa nearby. The marble's distinctive deep rose colour comes from iron oxide in the Conflent stone and has been quarried here since Roman times.
