Vernet-les-Bains

Vernet-les-Bains is a small spa town about 10 kilometres south of Prades, at the foot of the Canigou massif. It was popular with British visitors in the Belle Époque era — Rudyard Kipling came here several times — and retains some of its thermal spa infrastructure. The main reason to make the trip is the starting point it offers for walks up towards Canigou and the nearby Abbaye de Saint-Martin-du-Canigou, a dramatically situated 11th-century monastery perched on a cliff above the valley.

The walk up to Saint-Martin-du-Canigou from the valley below takes about 45 minutes and is steep but well-marked. The abbey itself, restored in the late 20th century, is still occupied by a monastic community and receives visitors for guided tours. The views from the abbey terraces down into the gorge and across to the plains are among the best in the Pyrenees.
