The Arboretum des Prés des Culands is a privately run garden two kilometres north of Meung that holds the national collection of Ilex — hollies — in France. The arboretum was created in the 1990s on a wetland of springs and small ponds, and the planting is built around them: water-loving trees and shrubs along the water, more than 500 holly species and cultivars on the drier ground, and a long meadow that turns to wildflowers in summer.
The garden is most colourful from October through January, when the hollies are in full berry, and is at its quietest in spring. The visit takes an hour or two, and the small entrance shop sells unusual cultivars to take home. Check the opening calendar before visiting — like many private French gardens, it has limited days.
