Château de Saint-Aignan

The château of St. Aignan sits at the top of the hill above the collegiate church, its Renaissance facades and medieval towers visible from the Cher valley below. The building is privately occupied and not open to visitors — it has been in the same family for generations — but the terrace in front of the gates is public and offers one of the finest panoramas in the southern Loire: the town tumbling down the hill, the Cher winding through its flat valley, and vineyards extending to the horizon.

The château dates in its current form to the 15th and early 16th centuries, built after the earlier medieval fortress was destroyed during the Hundred Years War. The main facade is a composed, early Renaissance design, distinctly less ornate than the great Loire châteaux to the north but architecturally coherent in a way that the show-off palaces sometimes are not. The view from the terrace alone justifies the climb.
