The Opal Coast's established surf school, teaching off the beach at Wissant and at two other spots up and down the coast — Wimereux and Équihen-Plage — depending on where the swell and wind are working on the day. Lessons are capped at eight people, which on a beach this size means you are not queuing for waves.
What they teach is broader than surfing: stand-up paddle when the bay is flat, bodyboard and skimboard for children, and longe côte — the northern French habit of walking chest-deep through the sea in a wetsuit, which sounds absurd and turns out to be popular. Boards and wetsuits are hired out separately if you already know what you are doing.
The season runs from the start of April to mid-November, seven days a week including holidays. Outside those months the school shuts and the bay belongs to the kitesurfers.
