Roman Theatre

The Roman theatre at Jublains is one of the few surviving Gallo-Roman theatres in northwestern France. The cavea — the curved seating area cut into a natural slope — is still clearly visible, and the scale of the structure indicates that Noviodunum was a significant regional centre. The theatre could hold several thousand spectators, far more than the current population of the town.

The structure dates to the first and second centuries AD and underwent several phases of construction and modification. The excavated area includes the stage building foundations and the orchestra. It is freely accessible and can be walked through without a guide, though the museum context adds considerably to the visit.
