Château de Vitré

Château de Vitré is one of Brittany's most striking town castles, with round towers and slate roofs set above the river valley. A first fortress stood here around the year 1000; the stone castle that shapes the town today grew in the Middle Ages.

The exterior is the main event. Walk around the gatehouse and walls before visiting the museum inside, then look back from the lower streets to see how completely the castle controls the town's skyline.
