Donaueschingen Palace

Princely residence of the Fürstenberg family with a notable art collection

The Schloss Donaueschingen is the seat of the Fürstenberg princely family, who have owned the town since the late seventeenth century. The current building is largely the result of an 1893 rebuilding in French Baroque Revival style — somewhat younger than it looks. The interiors are still richly furnished with family portraits, tapestries, hunting trophies and the remaining art collection.

The palace is open for guided tours during the summer season and is set in a fine park that includes the Donauquelle. The Karlsbau, a separate building nearby, used to house the famous Fürstenberg picture gallery and a celebrated library of medieval manuscripts; check current opening before making a special trip, as the collections have been substantially rearranged since the early 2000s sell-off.

A story
The Fürstenberg art collection, gathered by the family over four centuries, once included some of the masterpieces of German Renaissance painting — including a famous Hans Holbein portrait and an entire altarpiece by Hans Baldung Grien. Many of the best works were sold off in the early twenty-first century when the family ran into financial trouble, ending up in museums across Germany and Switzerland.
