Mittelalter- und Weihnachtsmarkt

Esslingen's Mittelalter- und Weihnachtsmarkt (Medieval and Christmas Market) is widely regarded as one of the finest Christmas markets in Baden-Württemberg, and its medieval component distinguishes it from the standard German fare. The market runs from late November through 23 December on and around the Marktplatz, with two parallel sections: a traditional Christmas market on the main square and a medieval market in the lanes nearby where traders dress in period costume and sell handmade goods by firelight.

The medieval market features craftspeople working with traditional tools — blacksmiths, potters, glassblowers, leather workers — alongside stalls selling honey wine (mead), smoked meats, and medieval-style pastries. Fire jugglers and musicians in period dress animate the evenings. The backdrop of the Altes Rathaus, the two Gothic churches, and the half-timbered houses makes the setting genuinely appropriate in a way it would not be in a modern city. The market attracts large crowds on weekends; visiting on a weekday evening is more atmospheric.

A story
Esslingen's medieval Christmas market has been running in its current format since 1976, though the town has held Christmas markets on the Marktplatz for centuries. The medieval component was added as a deliberate contrast to the modern commercialism that had taken over most German Christmas markets — an attempt to recreate the atmosphere of a 15th-century winter fair. It worked spectacularly. The combination of half-timbered buildings, open fire pits, costumed traders selling handmade goods, and the smell of mead and roasting meat draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each November and December.
