Burg Esslingen

The ruined Burg Esslingen sits on a forested ridge directly above the old town, reached by a short but steep climb through terraced vineyards. The castle complex consists of two main towers — the Dicker Turm (Fat Tower) and the Hochwacht — connected by stretches of curtain wall, all draped in ivy and surrounded by panoramic views across the Neckar valley toward Stuttgart.

The grounds are freely accessible, and a small restaurant at the castle hill serves local wine and regional food during the warmer months. From the terrace, you can look straight down into the Marktplatz and trace the full extent of the medieval town walls that still encircle much of Esslingen's old centre. In summer, outdoor theatre performances are staged in the ruins under the name Burgspiele Esslingen.

A story
Esslingen's ruined castle dominates the old town from a steep vineyard hill, though most of what you see today dates from the 13th to 15th centuries. The medieval walls were deliberately slighted by the townspeople themselves in 1692 to prevent French troops from occupying them — a striking case of self-destruction in the name of defence. The vineyards running down from the castle walls still produce Riesling and Trollinger grapes, making this one of the few urban castles in Germany where you can taste wine harvested from within the old fortifications.
