Heilig-Kreuz-Münster

The Heilig-Kreuz-Münster — the parish church of the Holy Cross — stands at the heart of Rottweil and gives a good measure of how wealthy the town was in the late Middle Ages. Built in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in Gothic style, it was extensively reworked in the late nineteenth century when the central tower received a more elaborate Neo-Gothic spire.

Inside, the church holds an unusual concentration of late medieval altarpieces, including works attributed to the workshop of Veit Stoss and a small fifteenth-century Crucifixion in the south aisle that is one of the finest carved figures in southern Germany. The fan vaulting in the choir is also worth a long look. Open daily; free.
