Ettaler Manndl

The Ettaler Manndl is a rocky summit directly above the village, reachable in about two hours on foot from Ettal. It's not a demanding climb by Alpine standards, but it rises steeply from the valley floor and the views from the top — down to the monastery dome, along the valley to Oberammergau, and south toward the higher peaks — are genuinely rewarding.

The hike starts from the village and follows marked trails through forest before emerging on the open ridge. In summer the route is busy with local walkers; in autumn it's excellent, with clear air and the beech forests turning gold. Winter closes the trail after snowfall.

The monastery is visible directly below from the summit, which gives a clear sense of how dramatically oversized the baroque dome is relative to the tiny valley settlement around it.

A story
The Ettaler Manndl is a distinctive rocky peak above the village that served as a navigation point for travellers on the medieval trading route through the Alps. The route from Augsburg to Venice passed through this valley, and the unusual rock formation — visible from miles away — told merchants and pilgrims they were approaching the monastery and the pass ahead.
