City Residence

Early Renaissance palace in the old town, built after Duke Ludwig X looked south to Italy.

The City Residence is Landshut's surprise: an Italianate Renaissance palace dropped into a Bavarian old town. Duke Ludwig X began the German wing in the 1530s, then added an Italian building after seeing the palaces of northern Italy.

It is a good counterpoint to Trausnitz Castle. The castle tells the medieval story from above; the residence shows how ambitious the dukes still were when court taste had moved toward painted rooms, arcades, and more polished urban display.
