Memmingen City Walls

Surviving two-kilometre ring of medieval walls, gates, towers, and green moat walks

Memmingen keeps a generous stretch of its medieval defences: about two kilometres of wall, with several gates and towers still marking the edge of the old town. The most satisfying way to see them is to walk the green strips where the moats once ran.

The walls also help Memmingen make sense. Unlike larger German cities where the old town dissolves into traffic, here you can still feel the historic city as a bounded place.
