Café Klenze

Maxvorstadt has Munich's best concentration of museum cafes and neighbourhood coffee. The Café in der Pinakothek der Moderne does a good lunch; the attached to Lenbachhaus is pleasant for coffee between galleries. For a more local experience, the streets around Türkenstrasse, Amalienstrasse, and Schellingstrasse have a concentration of student cafes, bars, and cheap restaurants serving the university population.

The Schelling-Salon at Schellingstrasse 54 is worth a visit for the atmosphere alone — a traditional German café with billiard tables that dates to 1872, dark wood panelling, and a clientele mixing students, pensioners, and occasional tourists. The coffee is old-fashioned, the prices reasonable, and the games of billiards ongoing.

A story
The museum quarter in Maxvorstadt has a good cafe ecosystem — the Alte Pinakothek's own café, the Café Luitpold on Brienner Strasse, and the Schelling-Salon (opened 1872) on Schellingstrasse, which has the oldest billiard tables in Munich and is said to be where Lenin and Hitler both passed through at different points in the 20th century.
