Gärtnerplatz

A circular neoclassical square in the southern Altstadt, flanked by the Gärtnerplatz Theater and a ring of restaurants, cafes, and bars. The neighborhood around the square is one of Munich's most lively: dense with independent restaurants, boutiques, and bars, with Gärtnerplatz itself serving as an outdoor living room on warm evenings when residents sit on the steps and pavement.

The surrounding streets — particularly Reichenbachstrasse and Müllerstrasse — have Munich's best concentration of independent restaurants outside Haidhausen. This is the area to explore for dinner without a plan: walk until something looks right. The State Museum for Egyptian Art and the adjacent Cuvilliés Theatre are a short walk north toward the Residenz.

A story
Gärtnerplatz is Munich's most openly gay neighbourhood — the concentration of bars, cafes, and restaurants around the circular square cater to a mixed crowd during the day and an increasingly LGBTQ+ crowd as the night progresses. The Gärtnerplatz Theater, a 19th-century opera house on the square, stages operetta and musical theatre.
