Augustiner Bräustuben

A traditional beer hall attached to the Augustiner brewery in the Neuhausen district, about 2 km west of the Altstadt. Augustiner is Munich's oldest brewery and arguably makes the finest Helles lager in the city — the light, slightly malty style that is the everyday drinking beer of Munich rather than the darker Märzen associated with Oktoberfest.

The Bräustuben is unpretentious and local — the clientele is a mix of brewery workers, neighbourhood residents, and the food is Bavarian and good. The schnitzel with potato salad and the roast pork are the choices to make. No reservations; large tables mean you'll share with strangers, which is the point.

A story
The Augustiner is the oldest Munich brewery still operating independently — not owned by a large brewing group — and many locals consider its Helles the best in the city. The Bräustuben is attached to the brewery itself, which means the beer travels about 50 metres from tank to tap. The difference is not imaginary.
