Zum Pulverer (the name refers to the town's old powder magazine, which is nearby) is one of the best places in Rothenburg for an evening glass of Franconian wine without the daytime tourist crush. It sits on Herrngasse, one of the main streets running through the old town, and draws a mix of locals and overnight guests rather than the day-trip crowds who have long since returned to their coaches.
The wine selection focuses on Franconian producers — the kind of dry Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau that the region is known for, served properly chilled in the distinctive Bocksbeutel. There is food, mostly small plates and snacks rather than full meals. The atmosphere in the evening is relaxed and unhurried in the way that Rothenburg becomes once the crowds have gone.
It is not a late-night place — closing time tends toward 10pm or 11pm — but for an hour or two after the Night Watchman's Tour ends, or before dinner at one of the restaurants nearby, it is exactly what a small wine town should have.
