Mühlentor

The Mühlentor — the Mill Gate — stands at the northern edge of the old town and takes its name from the millstream that once ran close by. Of the three surviving gates it is the most asymmetrical: a broad base with a single round tower attached to one side, giving it a somewhat lopsided but characterful silhouette. Like the others it is built of the dark red brick typical of Brandenburg Gothic.

The gate is not accessible inside but forms a natural waypoint on a walk around what remains of the medieval town wall. From here you can see the course the walls once took and get a sense of how compact and self-contained Bernau was in its medieval heyday. The three gates together make a satisfying short circuit of the old town.
