Werdertor

The Werdertor, on the western side of the old town, is the smallest and most slender of Bernau's three surviving gates. Its narrow round arch and compact red-brick tower give it a more delicate character than the Steintor — it looks almost too slight to have ever defended anything. The gate dates from the 14th century and was once connected to the town wall that enclosed the entire medieval settlement.

Today it stands freely in a small square and is not open to the public inside, but it makes for a rewarding five-minute detour when walking the perimeter of the old town. The medieval wall fragments that survive between the three gates are among the more complete examples of small-town Brandenburg fortification.
