Great Fountain

The Great Fountain (Große Fontäne) is the focal point of Sanssouci Park's main axis — a large circular basin from which a central jet rises 38 metres, surrounded by statues of Venus, Mercury, and the classical gods. It sits at the midpoint of the long straight axis that runs from the Sanssouci palace on the ridge down through the terraced vineyards and out to the Obelisk Portal in the east. From the palace steps, the fountain frames the view perfectly.

The fountain operates in warm weather and is switched on at set times — check the park schedule for activation hours, as it does not run continuously. In the early morning, before the crowds arrive, the Great Fountain basin with its marble figures reflected in still water is one of the best views in the park. The surrounding circular path is ringed with 18th-century marble sculptures, each worth examining individually.

A story
Frederick the Great designed the Great Fountain as the centrepiece of Sanssouci's main axis — a large circular basin with a jet rising 38 metres, positioned so that the view from the Sanssouci palace steps looks straight down through the fountain to the Obelisk Portal a kilometre away. The pump that was supposed to power it never worked in Frederick's lifetime. He sat in his palace for forty years looking at an empty basin. The fountain was only made to work properly in 1842, eleven years after his death.
