Lübbenau Market and Old Town

Lübbenau's market square (Markt) is the departure point for most boat tours and kayak trips into the Spreewald. The square itself is pleasant if unremarkable — the main draw is the access it provides to the canal network immediately behind it. The Kahnhafen (boat harbour) is a short walk from the market, where dozens of flat-bottomed Kahn boats queue up for departure.

The town is small enough to walk in an hour. The Sorbian cultural heritage is visible in the bilingual street signs and, occasionally, in the traditional dress worn during festivals. The tourist infrastructure is solid — there are plenty of restaurants serving local specialities (Spreewälder Gulasch, freshwater fish, and pickles at every meal) and the accommodation ranges from simple pensions to comfortable hotels.

A story
Lübbenau's market square was almost entirely rebuilt after World War II, but the church of St. Nikolai — a handsome baroque building with a distinctive onion dome — survived and has been the focal point of the town for over 300 years. The stork nests on the church roof are repaired and occupied every spring.
