German Maritime Museum

National maritime museum with historic vessels, ship models, and the famous Bremen cog.

The German Maritime Museum covers ships as machines, workplaces, trade tools, and national symbols. Its collection includes historic vessels and major exhibits on German seafaring, with the medieval Bremen cog giving the museum a rare object of international importance.

This is the natural companion to the Emigration Center. One museum explains why people boarded ships; the other explains the ships, ports, and maritime systems that made those journeys possible.

A story
The museum's best-known object is the Bremen cog, a medieval merchant ship dated to 1380. It was found in the Weser mud in 1962, a rare survival from the Hanseatic world that made northern German trade rich.
