Wilhelm Bauer

Preserved Type XXI U-boat, now a museum submarine in Bremerhaven's harbour.

Wilhelm Bauer is a preserved Type XXI submarine, the late-war German design that pointed toward the modern submarine age. Visiting it is cramped, technical, and sobering, especially because the vessel sits in a public harbour rather than behind museum glass.

It pairs well with the German Maritime Museum nearby. Even if you are not especially interested in military history, walking through the narrow interior gives a clear physical sense of what submarine service demanded.

A story
Wilhelm Bauer was launched as U-2540 near the end of the Second World War and was scuttled in 1945 without making a combat patrol. Raised in the 1950s, it later served in the West German navy before becoming a museum ship.
