The Stadtkirche is the old town's landmark, a Gothic hall church whose tower rises above the tiled roofs around Kirchplatz. Its history begins with an earlier Romanesque basilica, then stretches through centuries of rebuilding, fires, Reformation damage, and restoration.
Inside, the church is plainer than its long history might suggest, but fragments of medieval painting and the high hall space reward a short visit. The tower and churchyard also help you read the town centre: abbey power to the west, civic Bad Hersfeld clustered around the church and market streets.
