Einhard's Basilica

Rare Carolingian church built in the 820s by Einhard, Charlemagne's biographer and court scholar.

Einhard's Basilica in Steinbach is one of Michelstadt's serious surprises. Built between 824 and 827 by Einhard, Charlemagne's biographer, it is among the few Carolingian churches in Germany to survive in recognisable form.

The story is odd as well as old. Einhard first kept relics of Saints Peter and Marcellinus here, then moved them to Seligenstadt after deciding, reportedly because of troubling signs, that Michelstadt was not the right place for them.
