Alte Inselkirche

The Alte Inselkirche (Old Island Church) dates to 1696 and is the oldest Protestant church on the East Frisian Islands. Its construction used materials salvaged from the wreck of a Spanish Armada ship that foundered on the island in 1588 — the pulpit and several furnishings are said to incorporate timber from the wreck. A ship model hangs from the ceiling in the old seafaring tradition.

The church stands in the heart of the village, surrounded by the characteristic brick-and-reed-thatch cottages of the island. The interior is simple and whitewashed, with a peaceful, slightly austere atmosphere. There is a small museum attached covering the church's history and the Spanish Armada connection.

A story
The Alte Inselkirche contains a ship model hanging from the ceiling — an old seafaring tradition found in many North Sea coastal churches, where models of vessels were donated as thanks for safe return from the sea or as prayers for protection. The tradition dates back centuries and was especially common in fishing and whaling communities along the German, Dutch, and Scandinavian coasts.
