Goslarer Museum

Town museum with the original Krodo Altar — a rare eleventh-century bronze.

The town museum occupies a row of restored merchant houses on Königstraße, a few minutes' walk south of the market. The collection runs from prehistoric finds in the Harz to nineteenth-century mining tools, but the centrepiece is the Krodo Altar — a small bronze table on the backs of four kneeling figures, cast in around 1080. It is one of the oldest surviving bronze altars in Europe and arguably the most important object in Goslar.

Other rooms hold the original imperial eagle from the market fountain, models of the medieval town walls, and a careful reconstruction of how the Kaiserpfalz was lost and found again. Allow an hour for a slow visit; longer if the Rammelsberg's mineralogy section catches you on the way out.
