Marktkirche St Cosmas und Damian

Twin-towered parish church on the market square, with twelfth-century stained glass and a climbable north tower.

The main parish church of Goslar rises directly off the market square, its two towers unequal in height — the south one short and slate-clad, the north one taller and open to visitors. The building was begun in around 1150 as a flat-roofed Romanesque basilica and rebuilt with Gothic vaults in the fourteenth century. Inside, the surviving twelfth-century stained-glass roundels in the south aisle are among the oldest in northern Germany.

Climb the 165 steps of the north tower for the best overview of the old town. The view takes in the spires of the Marktkirche's rivals — the Frankenberger, the Jakobikirche, the Neuwerk — laid out in concentric rings around the market square.
