The Hitzacker Archaeological Centre focuses on the prehistoric settlement of the Elbe valley, with reconstructed buildings and demonstrations rather than a purely indoor display. The area around Hitzackersee has evidence of very early settlement, and the centre gives that long history a physical setting.
It is the most distinctive formal attraction in town, especially for travellers with children or anyone interested in how people lived along the river before the medieval trading town appeared.
