Hitzacker's old town is a compact knot of timber-framed houses close to the Elbe and the Jeetzel. Many buildings carry notes about former residents and family histories, which gives the lanes a more personal feel than a normal half-timbered backdrop.
This is the part of Hitzacker to take slowly. The town was badly damaged by fires in the 16th and 17th centuries, so what survives is not a frozen medieval set piece, but a small riverside town rebuilt in layers.
