The low-tide crossing from Cuxhaven to Neuwerk is the classic way to understand the island. Guided walkers take roughly three hours across the exposed seabed, while horse-drawn Wattwagen carriages make the same tidal journey in a more old-fashioned and less muddy style.
Do not improvise it. The route depends on tide, weather, and local knowledge, and the Wadden Sea can turn dangerous quickly when fog or water comes in.
